uta 唄 is a birth worker, drum keeper, and artist rooted in ohlone and ainu lands.
uta is a birth worker, drum keeper, and artist devoted to the mending of culture and ancestry. she attends to lineage healing through ritual work, with a particular focus on gestation, birth, and pregnancy loss. she is a certified Innate Postpartum care provider, and is honored to be part of ecosystems that nurture mothers, babies, and families in the postpartum time through nourishing foods, body work, energy work, and ceremony. she specializes in facilitating rites of passage for those who have experienced abortions and miscarriages, drawing from her ancestral tradition of mizuko kuyo, which means water baby ceremony in japanese. she is directing a magical realist documentary visual album called the village tilts on its axis/kizuna, about the spirit of an aborted baby born into a taiko drum and the unbreakable bonds between diasporic people, ancestral lands and cosmologies. she works with a collective of silkworm farmers in rural japan to restore the relationship between traditional fiber and birth arts. her lineages are rooted in miyagi and fukushima prefectures of ainu mosir, and yiddish-speaking communities of romania, hungary, lithuania and germany. she weaves home between the territories of ainu and ohlone people, and wherever her kinfolk call her to be in connection and service.
